Major League Baseball Player. Nicknamed "Oil", he played in the Major Leagues for twelve seasons with the New York Giants, Boston Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. Smith played mostly as a backup catcher, and had a reputation as being tough as nails on and off the field. Finished third in the National League batting title race in 1926.
